AMERICAN FRIENDS OF THE ISRAEL NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE CHILD

For 30 years, the National Council for the Child has been a strong and courageous advocate for all children in Israel. Through our work in advocacy, representation and education we promote the safety, welfare and rights of all children in Israel.

 

•The NCC's Ombudsman for Children and Youth assists approximately 12,000 children a year, giving them reason to believe that someone is there to listen, someone cares about their wellbeing, and that answers to their problems are possible.

 

•The NCC's Child Victim Assistance Program accompanies and assists over 370 child victims of sex or violent crimes a year through their stressful court process.

 

•The NCC's Children's Rights Mobile Unit, an innovative education program in operation since 1998, has introduced hundreds of thousands of children around the country to the concept of children’s rights and responsibilities; stressing equality and respect for themselves and the responsibility to protect these rights for others.

 

•Thousands of early childhood teachers and supervisors, working with thousands of children each year, participated in a training program to learn how to identify signs of children at risk, giving those children a chance that someone will recognize their distress and will speak out for them.

 

•A recent national campaign to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome has raised awareness to the dangers of shaking babies in the general public and the initiation of a nationwide program in Israel's hospitals for all new parents to help them deal with their baby's crying.

 

•Through the direct contact with Israel's children and youth and their families, the NCC staff was able to identify many situations in which children's rights and well-being needed to be improved by a change in policy or legislation, leading to changes that protect every child in this country. The National Council for the Child has initiated more than 100 legislative amendments to protect children in Israel's law books.
